Gabriela Nunes Da Silva’s first-half strike against Nigeria soured the perfect start the Super Falcons hoped to get against Brazil.
Ahead of their second group game against the Spanish female team, Soccernet.ng cites five Super Falcons stars to watch as Randy Waldrum’s side strive to steal all three points at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.
1. Asisat Oshoala
The Bay FC striker came up trumps in Nigeria’s 3-2 win against Australia at the 2023 FIFA World Cup. Following the number of chances the Super Falcons missed up-front against Brazil, Nigerian football fans have clamoured for Oshoala’s return into the starting eleven. Should Randy Waldrum re-instate the former Barcelona forward, she’ll be one to watch.
2. Rasheedat Ajibade
The Super Falcons captain led my example last time out and was arguably the best Nigerian player on the pitch despite their loss to Brazil. She created chances and had a shot on goal, and she will be one to watch as she inspires her team to rise to the occasion against Spain.
3. Chiamaka Nnadozie
The Paris FC goalkeeper was the only reason Brazil could not score more than one goal. She’ll have to be at her best against the Spaniards if Nigeria are to stand any chance of going through.
4. Deborah Abiodun
Still just 21, the Pittsburgh Panthers midfielder has been firm in the Super Falcons midfield. With proper support in a midfield pivot, Deborah is set to thrive against the Spanish midfield, blessed with many technically sound players.
5. Esther Okoronkwo
Okoronkwo scored some vital goals that led Nigeria to the Paris 2024 Olympics. She didn’t have the best time out against Brazil, but with her affinity for stepping up in big games, she’ll be one to watch.
