The Super Eagles of Nigeria are planning to achieve the seemingly impossible by qualifying for the 2026 World Cup following a woeful start to their qualification campaign, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian Eagles secured three 1-1 draws in their first three World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. A recent 2-1 loss to Benin Republic has further dented their hopes of qualifying for the tournament.
In response, the Super Eagles took to their social media pages to apologize to the Nigerian football community for their performance, promising to do everything possible to secure a ticket to the World Cup.
“We are back in the country and we are not happy about the way the two games panned out. We have had talks among ourselves and have resolved to fight hard till the end to ensure we do the impossible, which is qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. We don’t take your support for granted; we thank you immensely,” the statement reads.
The Super Eagles missed out on the last 2022 World Cup, won by Argentina, as they were unable to defeat their neighbors Ghana, who secured the ticket instead.
However, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions are walking a similar path as they sit in 5th place in the group standings with six games to go.
To keep their World Cup hopes alive, the Super Eagles of Nigeria must aim for a must-win victory in their remaining qualification matches.
Rather too late, I believe. Some players must be dropped while some must be invited to have any chance for such miracle. If possible, FINIDI should also go and someone more experienced and technically sound should replace him.
