Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United, have reportedly rejected a lucrative deal to sell their key player, Andy Okpe, to SuperSport United, Soccernet.ng reports.
According to reports circulating in the Nigerian media, the Pretoria-based club tabled a fee in the region of $150,000 for the Nigerian attacker.
Nigerian journalist, known as “Mike the Pundit” reported that this deal was rejected by Rivers United, who are looking to strengthen their squad for the next season.
Further reports revealed that Okpe, who scored seven goals in his 33 domestic league appearances for Rivers United, has submitted a transfer request to leave the club.
More than one clubs are reportedly interested in signing in the Nigerian attacker, with each willing to offer a fee in the region of $100,000.
To confirm these reports, Soccernet.ng reached out to Rivers United's media officer, Charles Mayuku, which he has been unable to respond to calls or texts.
These reports are still considered speculation until the club releases an official statement or the media officer provides more details about the transfer deal.
Compared to last two seasons, the Porthacourt-based club produced a subpar performance in the just-concluded 2023-24 season campaign where Enugu Rangers were crowned champions.
As the 2024-25 NPFL season campaign resumes in August, the Rivers State club are eyeing squad restructuring as they eye a successful season ahead.
