“It was difficult” – Rohr names three players who could have changed Nigeria’s fate vs Benin and South Africa

Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic handed the Super Eagles of Nigeria their first loss in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr named three key players who could have made a difference in Nigeria’s last 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian Eagles drew 1-1 against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and lost to the Republic of Benin, further diminishing their hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup.

Nigeria was without 2023 Africa Cup of Nations player of the tournament William Troost-Ekong, Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, and FC Nantes star Simon Moses, who could have made a difference.

The German tactician believes there is still a chance for the three-time AFCON champions to qualify, naming the three key players who could have made a difference in their last game.

“The group is still open, that’s true, and only four points separate us with six games to play. It’s possible that in all the last games, there can be a decision in Uyo when we play Nigeria. It could be a final because the Super Eagles will come back. It was difficult for them without (Victor) Osimhen, (William) Ekong, and Moses Simon. It’s a good team Finidi (George) has, and perhaps missing the very best players and Osimhen also, he can have some explanations for the defeat,” Rohr said, as quoted by Punch.

Following their dismal performances so far in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers—three draws and a loss—the 2023 AFCON silver medalists have only managed to collect three points out of a possible 12.

They are currently without a coach, and it is hoped that a new boss could lead them to their first victory in the qualifying games when they tackle Rwanda in their next match.
