Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor is reportedly monitoring KRC Genk forward Tolu Arokodare as a potential replacement for his compatriot Paul Onuachu, according to Soccernet.ng.
The Super Eagles attacker, after a brilliant stint in Belgium with Genk, attracted the interest of Southampton, where he joined for around €18 million.
During his time in Belgium, attention turned to Arokodare as a possible replacement for the towering striker, who was heavily linked with a move to Anderlecht before Genk secured his signature.
Onuachu’s time at Trabzonspor
After struggling to score in 13 games with Southampton, Onuachu found success in Turkey with Trabzonspor, scoring 14 goals and providing 4 assists in 20 appearances.
Despite his impressive season, Onuachu has expressed his desire to stay with Trabzonspor for another season, leaving the final decision with Southampton.
“I am very happy in Trabzon. My family and I want to stay here,” he said, as earlier quoted by Saints Socialite.
Following his hat-trick against Gaziantep FK, Onuachu discussed his future, recognizing Southampton’s authority over his stay at the club.
“I am trying to help in the best way possible. Coming back with such goals makes an important contribution to self-confidence. I am happy here, of course I want to stay, but ultimately my club has a decision to make.” Said the Super Eagles’ star.
Arokodare to replace Onuachu?
With Onuachu’s future uncertain at Trabzonspor, the club is reportedly exploring potential replacements.
Former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst has been mentioned as one option, while Trabzonspor is also interested in Arokodare.
With his contract expiring in 2027 and a market value of €4 million, Arokodare’s impressive performances this season, including 14 goals and 3 assists in 48 matches, have caught the attention of Trabzonspor’s scouting team.
Coach Abdullah Avcı has reportedly approved of the potential transfer as Trabzonspor aims to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season.
