NPFL Roundup: Sporting Lagos continue search for away win, Sikiru Alimi hits milestone with Remo Stars, Plateau United trash Doma and Rangers lose in seven-goal thriller

Matchday 29 of the NPFL 2023/2024 season was filled with action and entertainment as surprises bloomed from home to away ends. Soccernet.ng brings the round-up of the notable events from the NPFL weekend action.

Plateau United kicked the matchday off to a flying start as they put four past Doma United at the New Jos Stadium. David Onovo, Daniel Barnabas, Anthony Sunday and Bernard Mundi all got on the scoresheet as the JIB strikers returned to winning ways after three straight losses.

There were celebrations at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne as Sikiru Alimi scored his 50th NPFL career goal in his side’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Akwa United.

Sporting Lagos’ search for a first away win in the NPFL continues as they lost 1-3 to Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. Super Eagles striker, Junior Lokosa levelled the scores five minutes into the second half but it wasn’t enough as the home side added a quick fire-double in the late minutes of the second half.

Enugu Rangers’ eleven-game unbeaten streak ended as they lost in a seven-goal thriller against Katsina United. Michael Okoro Ibe scored a brace, with Azeez Falolu and Andrew Idoko joining in for Katsina while Joel Odoh, Godwin Obaje and Isaac Saviour were on the scoresheet for Rangers.

Kwara United’s clash against Bendel Insurance ended in a 1-1 draw while Finidi George’s Enyimba lost to Lobi Stars by a lone goal. Lobi Stars are now joint top of the league with Enugu Rangers on 51 points, with Enyimba just three points below.

Niger Tornadoes hit Gombe for five. Clinton Jephta scored a brace while Ernest Chidiebere, Hussaini Mohammed, and Bashiru Usman all joined in to give Tornadoes their third consecutive win. Gombe United are now rock bottom on the NPFL table and are desperate for results.

Sunshine Stars were unable to defeat Bayelsa United despite having the home advantage. Muniru Abdul-Rahman broke the deadlock for the visitors before Tunde Adeniji levelled the scores for the host.

Twenty-eight goals were scored across eight games this weekend. The game between Abia Warriors and Rivers United was postponed due to the latter’s involvement in Continental competition. Kano Pillars will take on Shooting Stars tomorrow.
