Four key expectations for Finidi George in his new role as head coach of the Super Eagles

The former international aims to guide the former African champions back to the summit of continental and global football

Four key expectations for Finidi George in his new role as head coach of the Super Eagles

Nigeria's football has taken a significant step forward with the appointment of Finidi George as the head coach of the national team.

The Nigeria Football Federation departed from recent policies of hiring European coaches to appoint the former Super Eagles winger as head coach.

Jose Peseiro succeeded Gernot Rohr after a brief Augustine Eguavoen interlude, but it is Finidi who now takes the reins from the Portuguese tactician.

The former Ajax Amsterdam winger aims to achieve the enviable heights reached by the most successful Nigerian coach ever, the late Stephen Keshi.

Finidi's impact over the next few years will be measured by four critical parameters.

World Cup qualifications

Finidi's Super Eagles must secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria's absence from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was a disappointment, and failure to qualify for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico would be a devastating setback.

The Eagles have started the qualifying campaign for the Mundial poorly, earning only two points from their first two group games.

With only the group leader guaranteed a spot, the Super Eagles currently trail behind Rwanda and South Africa in Group C.

However, Finidi could change this narrative in June by guiding Nigeria to victories over South Africa and the Benin Republic.

Subsequent fixtures against Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and return matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic will be crucial.

Successfully navigating these matches and securing Nigeria's qualification for the World Cup would solidify Finidi's position as a beloved Nigerian coach.

AFCON semifinals target

As the assistant to Jose Peseiro, Finidi played a role in guiding the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.

Under Finidi's leadership, Nigeria should comfortably qualify for the next edition of the tournament in Morocco.

The upcoming AFCON could be one of the toughest to win in history, with strong contenders such as defending champions Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal, and hosts Morocco expected to participate.

Despite the challenges, Nigeria's impressive performance in the last edition demonstrates that the Super Eagles are among the continent's top teams.

While winning the AFCON is never guaranteed, reaching the semifinals should be Finidi's minimum target.

Improved style of play for the Super Eagles

While Peseiro received praise for guiding Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, his defensive style of play was criticized for stifling the team's attacking talents.

As Peseiro's right-hand man, Finidi understands the desire for a more dynamic approach.

Drawing from his experience as a brilliant winger, Finidi should look to build a team that combines defensive solidity with attacking flair.

Establishing this identity will be crucial to his success as a coach.

NPFL players integration

Finidi's appointment brings hope to players in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

During Peseiro's tenure, NPFL-based players were largely overlooked.

Finidi, who has coached Enyimba FC since September 2021, is familiar with the talents in the league.

Nigerians desire to see the new Oghenekaro Etebo, Sunday Mba, and Godfrey Oboabona in the national team, and the burden is now on Finidi to do this in a healthy way.

Finidi recognizes the potential of NPFL players to strengthen the Super Eagles squad and is committed to giving them opportunities on the national team.

Players such as Enyimba's Ikenna Cooper, Remo Stars' Sodiq Ismaila, and Akwa United's Sani Sulaiman have demonstrated their quality, and Finidi's integration of home-based and foreign-based stars could define his legacy as a coach.

well. after watching Bayern vs real Madrid yesterday night.. I think finidi wil know wat best way to approach his match plans . playing away .let wait for the second leg ..
and again see wat happens in today game too .
if paseiro used his 6 3 1 to get to final . without easy transmission.but real Madrid used same with ease transmission and no lapses or weakness is seen . i m sure the era of 4 2 4 is gone ..but to win home matches wat wil our coach use . it will depend on the opponent….
so for now let wait for the second leg of the Bayern Madrid game .
we remember paseiro came with attack attack attack but after he lost a game he had to sit down to change his formation. after we contacted his family man to talk to him in Portugal. .. den he started reading our post and changed to 5 4 1 and 6 3 1. reason he got to the final of afcon. and afterward ran away because he was critized for using this method and he knows going forward he can’t change the team to attacking mode after only 2 points in the WKup qualifers.
the south Africa can used long Ball to open up a bad package defending defence.
Bayern could have learnt this before their game yesterday but dey were busy passing the ball around.. if not for the referee dey could have lost yesterday..
so let see wat this information wil teach the eagles new coaches
