Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has stated that the team wants to take their form at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations into their international friendly game against Ghana on Friday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles surprised fans earlier this year when they reached the final of the AFCON in Ivory Coast. Before the competition, they had some disappointing results under the tutelage of Jose Peseiro, and that caused fans to lose hope in the team.
However, they shocked fans with their compact but effective style of play, and that took them to the final of the competition. Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final.
The Super Eagles will file out for the first time since the AFCON loss in February, but this time, it will be under the tutelage of Finidi George. They take on Ghana at Stade de Marrakech on Friday, and it is expected to be a tough one because of the rivalry between the two countries.
Ahead of the game, coach Iwobi has stated that the team wants to continue to win games, just like they did in the AFCON.
“We could not really reflect on the AFCON when we got back to our clubs because it was in-season and we haven’t got much time. But of course, we want to continue with our form at the AFCON and hopefully push on to make things greater again,” Iwobi said per Soccernet.ng.
“The game is a rivalry against another nation that is close to us, so we’ll give our full 100 percent to try and get the result you want.”
The Super Eagles will be hoping to perform well and get back to shape as they prepare for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa in June.
