Super Eagles stand-in captain Kenneth Omeruo has stated that the interim coach, Finidi George, has a good relationship with the players and has the experience to lead the team, Soccernet.ng reports.
Finidi is one of the greatest players who has played for the Super Eagles, and he was quite successful in his playing days, winning the UEFA Champions League, Nations Cup, Super Cup, and Copa Del Rey.
After his illustrious playing career, the 52-year-old went into management and got the Enyimba job in 2021. A year later, he was appointed as an assistant coach to Jose Peseiro, who was employed as the manager of the Super Eagles in 2022.
However, Peseiro left the job in February this year at the expiration of his contract, and Finidi took over as the interim coach to see Nigeria through the friendly games against Ghana and Mali.
In his first game as interim coach, Finidi led the Super Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Ghana. But, in his second game, Nigeria fell to a 2-0 loss to Mali.
Despite their loss, Omeruo, who featured and captained the team against Mali, believes Finidi has what it takes to lead the Super Eagles.
“He(Finidi) has a very good relationship with the players. He's someone we know, we respect, and he has every experience to lead us. I think he's managed the team very well,” Omeruo told Modo Victor.
The Nigeria Football Federation is yet to reveal their man for the Super Eagles job, but Finidi is one of the candidates. Nigeria's next game is the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, and the NFF would have to produce a permanent coach as soon as possible.
