The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a spot in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after their victory against South Africa on Wednesday
Super Eagles team have been spotted mourning the tragic loss of Nigerian football fans who lost their lives while watching the semi-final clash between Nigeria and South Africa at the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.
Reports indicate that five individuals tragically passed away during the intense semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana.
Despite Nigeria securing a 4-2 victory and advancing to the final of the 2023 AFCON, the mood was somber as news of the fans’ deaths spread.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, the Super Eagles social media platforms shared a message expressing condolences and offering prayers for the departed souls and their grieving families.
“During the course of our semi-final match, we tragically lost supporters. In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments.
“As the Nigeria vs South Africa match unfolded, they were lost in the thrill of the game, unaware of the looming danger. May their souls find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings. Rest in peace.”
Among the reported casualties were prominent figures such as Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Ayuba Abdullahi, Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, and a corps member serving in Adamawa State.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo, Kelechi Iheanacho, and the rest of the Super Eagles team were spotted observing silence in honour of the lives lost during the semi-final clash.
