Van Dijk: Asake and Omah Lay’s music fan wins Carabao Cup for Liverpool

With their triumph over Chelsea, Liverpool has further solidified their dominance in the EFL Cup, now boasting an unprecedented ten wins in the competition

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk, known for his love of Nigerian music artists Ahmed Ololade, aka Asake, and Stanley Omah Didia, aka Omah Lay, clinched victory for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

The highly anticipated showdown between Liverpool and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium ended in a dramatic fashion, extending into extra time after a fiercely contested 90 minutes.

Despite having his first goal disallowed, the Netherlands international made a significant impact with a decisive header in the 118th minute, securing Liverpool’s 10th triumph in the competition.

The Liverpool center-back’s admiration for Omah Lay and Asake has been earlier made evident as he listed their songs as part of his pre-match ritual.

The absence of key players like Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Ryan Gravenberch, who was stretchered off after a challenge, did not deter Liverpool’s determination to secure victory.

The win marks the first step in Liverpool’s quest for a potential quadruple in what is manager Jürgen Klopp’s farewell season.

However, it was a bitter disappointment for Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino, who have now suffered six consecutive defeats in Wembley finals, including three against Liverpool.

Despite the team’s success, Van Dijk’s individual brilliance was recognised with the Man of the Match award, marking his third such accolade in finals for Liverpool in 2019, 2022, and now 2024.
