The Super Falcons defeated Cameroon in the semifinal round, and they now know their opponents for the next round
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will play South Africa in the final phase of the 2024 Olympics qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nigeria had to settle for a goalless draw when they played Cameroon in the first leg of the semi-final Olympic qualifiers fixture. However, they progressed to the final phase after defeating Cameroon 1-0 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Monday, thanks to a goal from Esther Okoronkwo.
However, they needed to wait for the result of the second leg of the fixture between South Africa and Tanzania to know their opponents in the final phase. The Banyana Banyana already had a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Tanzania, and they just needed to avoid defeat in the second leg to progress.
South Africa did not fall short of expectations as a goal from Thembi Kgatlana sealed a 1-0 victory for the one-time African champions.
The 4-0 aggregate sealed South Africa’s place in the next round, where they will play Nigeria. The game is set to take place in April, with the Super Falcons welcoming the Banyana Banyana to Nigeria for the first leg on April 1, which the second leg will take place eight days later.
Nigeria have a big rivalry with South Africa in both male and female football. The Banyana Banyana have won three of their last four meetings. The last time Nigeria defeated South Africa in 90 minutes was in the semi-final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2016.
American tactician Randy Waldrum will be looking to lead the Super Falcons to their first Olympic appearance since 2008.
