As Nigeria gears up for the 2023 AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire, a significant challenge looms over the Super Eagles — the perplexing choice of a first-choice goalkeeper among the trio of Stanley Nwabili, Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo, a decision that could shape the team's fate in the tournament.

In crafting his final squad for the competition, head coach Jose Peseiro unveiled a goalkeeping trio that has stirred debate among fans and pundits alike.

At the forefront of this discussion is the rightful claim to the first-choice goalkeeper spot.

On the surface, Francis Uzoho seems like the logical choice.

Since Peseiro assumed the managerial reins in 2022, Uzoho has been the go-to goalkeeper, barring a suspension-induced absence against Sierra Leone.

However, Uzoho's track record has not been without blemish, with a series of costly errors eroding the trust once bestowed upon him.

While excelling for Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus, Uzoho has struggled to replicate that form in the Super Eagles jersey.

His 34 caps for Nigeria reveal a concerning statistic — only 11 clean sheets.

This inconsistency raises doubts about his reliability, prompting a crucial question: Is Uzoho the steadfast guardian Nigeria needs in goal?

Enter Olorunleke Ojo, a seasoned goalkeeper with a decorated domestic career, crowned by helping Enyimba FC secure the Nigeria Professional Football League in 2023.

Despite his NPFL accolades, Ojo's lack of international experience introduces an element of uncertainty.

Debuting in the pressure cooker of the AFCON might be a risk Peseiro is hesitant to take.

The dark horse in this race is Stanley Nwabili, a 27-year-old custodian plying his trade with Chippa United in the South African Premier Soccer League.

Peseiro's recent scouting mission to watch Nwabili in action indicates a genuine consideration for the goalkeeper's inclusion.

Nwabili, known for his proficiency with his feet and solid shot-stopping abilities, is not without quirks. His eccentric style is evident in the six yellow cards he accumulated in 15 games this season.

Nevertheless, his commendable record of conceding only 14 goals while keeping seven clean sheets demonstrates an ability to get the job done.

The upcoming friendlies before the AFCON present a crucial testing ground for Nwabili.

Peseiro's decision could hinge on this performance—if Nwabili impresses, he may just earn the coveted starting spot. If not, the familiar presence of Uzoho might be the default choice.

Regardless of who dons the gloves, unity and support from the team and fans are paramount.

As Nigeria aim to clinch the AFCON trophy for the first time since 2013, the chosen goalkeeper will need unwavering backing to navigate the challenges that lie ahead. The stage is set, and the Super Eagles await their custodian to rise and guard the nation's dreams.
