Boniface is currently out injured, but he could lose his place before he returns
German Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen have signed Borja Iglesias from Laliga club Real Betis on a six-month loan deal, Soccernet.ng reports.
Bayer Leverkusen have been on an amazing run in Europe this season. They are the only club across Europe’s top five leagues that has not lost a game. An important reason for their success is Super Eagles hitman Victor Boniface.
The Nigerian hitman has registered 16 goals and eight assists in 23 games for Die Werkself across all competitions.H
owever, he sustained an injury while on international duty with Nigeria. He made coach Jose Peseiro’s 23-man list for the Africa Cup of Nations, but he got ruled out just days before the competition because of a muscle injury and had to undergo surgery at Bayer Leverkusen.
With Boniface’s injury, the only available senior striker at Bayer Leverkusen is Patrik Schick, who just recovered from an injury.
With Boniface set to return to action in April, Bayer Leverkusen swooped in for Real Betis striker Iglesias, who has registered two goals and one assist in 18 appearances.
Although, there is no mandatory buy clause in Iglesias’ contract, there is a possibility that Bayer Leverkusen may decide to keep him if he performs well. As such, there have been questions raised about Boniface’s place in the team.
Before his injury, Shick was the first-choice striker at BayArena, and with Boniface currently out, he could win back his position if he performs well. Iglesias could also do well with the change of scenery as he has spent all his life in Spain.
If Boniface doesn’t get up and running after he returns from injury, he could lose his spot in the team.
Boniface is better than Iglesias. Even he can’t displace Tella.
