Awoniyi has been out of action for over six weeks, but he returned to action with a bang
Super Eagles striker Taiwo marked his return from injury with a goal for Nottingham Forest in their 2-1 loss to Arsenal at City Ground, Soccernet.ng reports.
Awoniyi has been out of action for six weeks because of a groin injury he sustained while on international duty for Nigeria. Following his injury, he had to undergo surgery, which ruled him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
However, Awoniyi returned to action for Nottingham Forest in their Premier League tie against Arsenal on Tuesday.
When both teams met in the first leg, the 26-year-old Nigerian hitman got off the bench to score for the Tricky Trees and this time, he was introduced into the game at halftime.
But upon Awoniyi’s introduction, Arsenal went two goals up 27 minutes into the game. Nonetheless, Nottingham Forest woke up from their slumber in the dying embers of the games.
Gary Montiel received a long pass from the Tricky Trees’ backline and sent in a cross to find Awoniyi, who was running through on goal. The Nigerian striker was sandwiched between two Arsenal defenders, but he managed to squeeze out a shot that beat David Raya in Arsenal’s goal to make it 2-1.

Awoniyi had another chance just before the blast of the final whistle, but he failed to score. Eventually, Arsenal ran out with all three points.
The loss leaves Nottingham Forest in 16th place, and Awoniyi now has five Premier League goals this season.
