The Super Eagles of Nigeria recently defeated the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations host, Côte d’Ivoire, to stay on course in the tournament
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has emphasised the team’s goal of topping Group A in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament just under 24 hours before their crucial group match, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured all three points in their crucial clash against the AFCON 2023 host, which earned them four points to sit in the second spot of the Group A standings.
While some in the Nigerian football community predicts overlooking or settling for a draw against bottom-placed Guinea-Bissau, Peseiro remains confident for a victory in the match
Speaking in a press conference witnessed by Soccernet.ng, Peseiro conveyed the team’s determination to secure a victory at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium.
“We want to play our last group match with all seriousness. We have accomplished our target against Ivory Coast, and our next plan is to beat Guinea-Bissau” Peseiro stated. “Our focus now is against Guinea-Bissau, and we want to reach the first position; we want to fight for the spot in the group, and to do that, we need to improve on our next match.”
Acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Peseiro emphasised that Guinea-Bissau is a formidable team with skilled players.
Despite their recent losses, he cautioned against underestimating them, highlighting the need for the Super Eagles to demonstrate responsibility and deliver a superior performance on the field.
He added: “Bissau is a good team with quality players, [and] we cannot underestimate them. They played good football, and they can beat any team, but we know our responsibility, and that must show on the field of play with better performance.”
The Super Eagles are set to face Guinea-Bissau tomorrow, aiming to secure all three points for a smooth advancement from the group.
