Serie A: Milan legend refers to the transfer of Chukwueze, Pulisic and others as waste of funds

Samuel Chukwueze scored the equalizer for Milan against Borussia Dortmund in midweek, but the team conceded two more goals as they lost 3-1.

Former Milan centre-back and technical director, Paolo Maldini, has called out the Milan board over the transfers that occurred last summer, labelling it a waste of money, Soccernet.ng reports.

Maldini, 56, donned the Rossoneri jersey across three decades, before returning to the club where he spent his entire footballing career as a technical director in 2018.

In his time as a Sporting director, Milan had a glimpse of the glory days, becoming UEFA Champions League regulars, and winning the Scudetto in 2022.

Surprisingly, a year later, Milan sacked Maldini and that raised a few eyebrows in the football world after the impeccable development the club experienced with him as a technical director.

In an exclusive with Repubblica, the Milan legend explained what happened with the club’s hierarchy, and labelled the summer transfer that saw Samuel Chukwueze, Luka Jovic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Noah Okafor join the club, as a waste of money.

“The narrative on this issue made me smile a little. You don’t have to inconvenience the algorithms to take Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic and Chukwueze, there was no need to sign them. You can’t compare the previous four transfer windows with the last one, we fought on the market with different weapons,” the five-time Champions League winner said.

The quality of the transfers in the window is what ticked Maldini off, considering the price tags. Chukwueze joined Milan from Villarreal for €30 million in July after scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists for the Yellow Submarines last season.

Since joining the club, Chukwueze has only been able to find the back of the net once, as he’s played mostly second fiddle to ex-Chelsea man, Christian Pulisic.
