Gambia's esteemed football official, Bakary Papa Gassama, has officially hung up his whistle, marking the end of an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, Soccernet.ng reports.
Gassama, one of Gambia's most respected referees, brought closure to a remarkable journey that included officiating in prestigious tournaments such as the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and FIFA World Cup finals.
Gassama, 44, gained prominence within the refereeing domain when he joined FIFA's elite panel in 2007.
Starting his career in domestic football leagues in The Gambia, he swiftly ascended to oversee African regional tournaments. He became a fixture in the past three FIFA World Cups held in Brazil, Russia, and Qatar.
His distinctive style and authoritative command of the game solidified Gassama's standing as a respected figure on the African continent.
Responding to Gassama's retirement, the Gambian Football Federation lauded the referee for his stellar career. The federation noted,
“As Gassama's international career concludes, he leaves behind a legacy of integrity and professionalism. His decision to step aside is fueled by a commitment to pave the way for younger referees to shine on the global stage.”
Nigeria had several meeting points with Gassama during his illustrious career, the most memorable of which was in the semifinals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
Gassama was the centre referee as the Super Eagles defeated Mali 4-1 to book a place in the tournament's final.
The Gambian official showed Efe Ambrose the match's first yellow card a minute after defender Elderson Echiejile gave Nigeria the lead.
It was the only booking Nigeria received – Mali picked up three – as further goals from Brown Ideye, Emmanuel Emenike, and Ahmed Musa made it a comfortable evening for the Eagles.
Interestingly, the Super Eagles have not won a semifinal match since that encounter, losing to Algeria in the semis at the 2019 AFCON.
