We will sack Jose Peseiro if– NFF board member

Peseiro has been underwhelming since he took charge of the Super Eagles, but the NFF's hands are tied

Nigeria Football Federation board member Nse Essien has stated that they are unhappy with Jose Peseiro's performance as Super Eagles coach. However, they can not sack him because they cannot afford to pay him off, Soccernet reports.

Portuguese tactician Peseiro took charge of the Super Eagles in May 2022, but he has been unimpressive. The former Braga coach arrived with a rich CV. However, his poor winning rate and penchant for getting sacked in his previous jobs stood out.

Since Peseiro was appointed, he has won just six of his 13 games. The Super Eagles have not improved since Gernot Rohr was sacked in 2021.

Nigeria started their 2026 World Cup journey last week with fixtures against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. The Super Eagles were the favourites to win, but they were very disappointing, forcing Lesotho to a draw in Abuja and sharing the spoils with Zimbabwe in Rwanda.

Following the recent results, Nigerian football fans clamoured for Peseiro's sack. However, NFF chief Essien has revealed that it is a complex situation.

“It is unfortunate that instead of six points from two games, we have just two,” Essien told OJB Sports.

“We have put ourselves in a very difficult situation. But when you say the NFF should sack the coach, we didn't employ him.

“When you come to look at it, it was the sports ministry that employed him. They should have paid his salary, but up till now, they have not paid a dime.

“If you sack the coaches now, who pays the compensation? Not a dime has been paid to this coach, who earns around $70,000 every month. If you sack him, you leave us with the responsibilities, and Nigerians will also crucify us.

“We have to respect his contract, but if we had the money to give him, why wouldn't we relieve him because we are not happy.”

With the Africa Cup of Nations just a few weeks away, Nigeria is in a precarious situation. With the recent performances, the Super Eagles do not look good enough to win gold in Ivory Coast.

I totally disagree with your submissions, Nigerians had been clamouring for the sack of this inefficient coach after the expiration of his contract and you guys went ahead to renew his contract.
We have given him enough time to prove himself to no avail , he’s technically and tactically poor, he also lacks the proficiency to move our football forward, hence, needs to be sacked.
we have to bring any of our local coaches to do the job due to time constraint.

I think NFF has their own return share of Paseiro’s salary, maybe that’s is why they are living the man who is technically and tactically poor to handle the team. I have suspicious about this when he (Paseiro)sacked Ike shorunmu the goalkeeper trainer and NFF did nothing to it. base on the fact that he’s been corrected. ever since Shorunmu is saved, the guys plays rubbish on the pitch.

at any cost Paseiro must be sack oooo. we can’t rely on him for the coming tournament .

why are we always putting ourselves in such a difficult situation as this and will not act promptly until it becomes very injurious before doing something about the already bad situation. This situation played out when Genort Roh was reluctantly sacked when it became too obvious and we paid dearly for it. when Eguavon and his lame duck team took over, we saw what happened. Peseiro has shown a high degree of incompetence with no technical or tactical depth. The match between Lesotho and Zimbabwe are clear red flags to us, unless the football administrators and managements have made up their minds that we will not be at the 2026 world cup and the Afcon in January will be a mere attendance. it will be less costly for Peseiro to be sacked and and a competent coach with proofs appointed than suffer heart breaks in the Jan Afcon and an absence in the next world cup.

Here we go again – sack the coach sack the coach. It’s time we look at what really goes on behind the scenes. There is finidi who part the team . What does he do. What has he done at Club level . Then we have the TechnicL director of football who we know what happened in AFCON 22. Wirh The AFCON around the corner I think it will be a better chance to see how good or bad the coach is . There will be more time for the team to train and gel together . There will be more time for the coach to know his players then if he fails a new coach can be put in place prior to the next round of World Cup matches – but if the NFF or the Sports Ministry are not prepared to pay too dollar and messing with people’s wages then you are always going to get substandard coaches . Moreover I am a spurs supporter and don’t like the type of play teams under Portuguese coaches – was this guy not selected on the recommendation of Jose Mourinho – get the Dutch or Eastern European coaches but above all a coach who has a free hand – on the Nigeria Front I would go for one of the under 20 coaches or even yusuf with a foreign coach under him as you see Senegal do

I watched both matches..the game against Lesotho & the game against Zimbabwe. Both games were a difficult watch. Do you call this entertainment?
it is not only the coach that should be sacked. Even with the new format of 9 qualifiers from the Africa Zone, we still struggle to qualify
The forwards were lack luster, the midfield was non- existent, and the defence is a Joke
