KAA Gent’s Gift Orban had a slow start to the 2023-24 season campaign compared to his 2022-23 season records.
Super Eagles invitee, Gift Orban, is in contention for the UEFA Europa Conference League Player of the Week award, Soccernet.ng reports.
Despite a slow start to the season, the 21-year-old striker showcased his goal-scoring prowess with a remarkable hat-trick in a thrilling 3-2 victory against Icelandic side Breidablik on Thursday.
Orban, formerly with Stabaek Fotbal, opened the scoring for Gent in the sixth minute, sparking an eventful match.
Despite a comeback attempt by Breidablik, including two goals from Jason Svanthorson, Gent secured the win with Orban converting a penalty in the 54th minute and adding another goal 21 minutes later.
This outstanding performance has earned the Nigerian forward a nomination for the Player of the Week.
He will be competing against Bodo/Glimt’s Faris Moumbagna, Breidablik’s Jason Svanthorsson, and Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Dor Peretz for the prestigious accolade.
Orban, who initially made an impact at Ghent with five goals—including an hattrick—in six appearances in the same tournament last season, has experienced a goal drought this season, limiting his time in Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s squad.
However, his recent hat-trick has put him back in the spotlight, vying for the Player of the Week title in the Europa Conference League.
