The Super Eagles had failed to win a friendly game since 2019, but they ended the winless run against Mozambique
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has admitted that he is happy with their 3-2 victory over Mozambique that ended their five-year winless streak in friendly games, Soccernet reports.
Nigeria squared off against Mozambique at the Estadio Municipal De Albufeira. After a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in their first friendly game last Friday, the three-time African champions had to get a victory against the Mambas from Mozambique to boost their morale ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations next January.
Going into the fixture, Nigeria had not won any of their previous 14 friendly games dating back to 2019. However, they ended that poor run. Mozambique got the lead early in the game, but Nigeria staged a comeback thanks to goals from Terem Moffi, Moses Simon, and Frank Onyeka.
Following the result, Peseiro stated that he was happy that the team has ended their poor run.
“I am happy because after 15 matches, we have finally won a game,” Peseiro said after the game.
“We have not won a friendly game in the last five years. We have had eight defeats and seven draws but today, the result was good.”
The next time Nigeria will file out will be in November, and that will be their last chance to get some minutes together before the 2023 AFCON.
