Akor Adams sealed a £4.5m move to Montpellier this summer after spending the last 8 seasons in Norway with Sogndal and Lillestrom
Former Flying Eagles striker, Akor Adams, has revealed his ambition to emulate his compatriot and former Super Eagles forward John Utaka’s legendary status at Montpellier, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 23-year-old joined La Pallaide from Norwegian side Lillestrom this summer and has seamlessly settled into his new environment with 3 goals in 5 French Ligue 1 games.
Starting against Le Havre, less than a week after his arrival, he became the first player in the history of Montpellier to score two goals in his French Ligue 1 debut.
A week later, he scored another goal against Lyon to help his team claim a 1-4 victory at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
Having had a good start to his career at the Stade de la Mosson, Adams revealed that former Nigerian International John Utaka gave him some words of inspiration upon signing for the club and he is aiming to follow in his footsteps.
Utaka attained legendary status at the club having made 68 appearances and scored 12 goals in two seasons at the Stade de la Mosson between 2011 and 2013, winning the French Ligue 1 title in 2012.
He said: I spoke to him before signing here. He described to me the culture of the club with his family spirit and he told me that it would be the ideal context for me to continue my progress, Adams revealed during a chat as quoted on Montpellier’s website
For us Nigerian footballers, John is a legend. He was born there, grew up there, wore the colors of the national team successfully, and when he said to me ‘It’s your turn’ knowing that I grew up watching him play on TV it was a powerful moment. I am also aware of what he has brought to Montpellier and his popularity with the supporters.
Adams will be aiming to regain his scoring form when Montpellier host Rennes in their next league assignment on Saturday, having failed to get on the scoresheet in their last 3 games
