Official: Nigerian midfielder Igbekeme joins SD Ponferradina from Real Zaragoza

With a statement on their official website, SD Ponferradina have announced the signing of Nigerian midfielder James Igbekeme, Soccernet.ng reports.

The talented player joins Ponferradina on a permanent deal from Real Zaragoza, penning a two-year contract that will bind him to the club until the summer of 2025.

Igbekeme’s football journey began in Portugal, where he plied his trade with GD Ribeirao, AD Oliveirense, and Gil Vicente FC.

His debut in the Portuguese second division during the 2017/2018 campaign with Gil Vicente FC marked a notable start to his professional career.

In the summer of 2018, Igbekeme’s talents attracted the attention of Real Zaragoza, and he subsequently signed with the club. Over three and a half seasons, he showcased his abilities in 96 appearances in Spain’s Second A division and eight outings in the Copa del Rey.

In early 2022, a loan transfer took him across the Atlantic to the United States MLS, where he donned the Columbus Crew jersey.

Following that stint, he embarked on another loan adventure, this time with Wisla Cracovia in February of this year.

Upon his arrival at Ponferradina, the Nigerian midfielder expressed his delight, stating, “My agent told me about the club’s interest, and two days later José (Sietes) called me. I think it’s a good opportunity for me, and that’s why I’m here.”

Igbekeme self-identifies as a “box-to-box” midfielder, emphasizing his versatility in both offensive and defensive roles.

Regarding transitioning from the Segunda Division to the lower-tier Primera División RFEF, Igbekeme asserted, “Before, I played in Poland, which is very similar.”

He also lauded the positive atmosphere within the Ponferradina dressing room, saying, “From the first day, all my teammates have treated me very well, and I am happy both with them and with the entire coaching staff.”

Igbekeme could play his first competitive game for Ponferradina this weekend when the club and Celta de Vigo II trade tackles at the Estadio El Toralín in Ponferrada.
