Nigerian striker’s vanishing act fuels transfer fire as Besiktas lurk around for Cremonese star

The relationship between Cremonese and their star striker David Okereke seems to have taken a tumultuous turn, Soccernet.ng reports.

Okereke’s future with the team appears uncertain as he was notably absent from the squad during Cremonese’s 3-1 triumph (in extra time) over Crotone in the Italian Cup on Monday night.

According to a report from the Cuoregrigiorosso, the Nigerian forward explicitly requested to be excluded from the Italian Cup clash against Crotone. This move has indirectly conveyed his dissatisfaction with the current situation and strongly implies his intention to seek opportunities in more prestigious leagues than Serie B.

Despite his noteworthy contribution of seven goals in the previous Serie A season, Okereke’s efforts were not enough to salvage Cremonese from relegation. A similar fate befell compatriot Cyriel Dessers, who has already departed for Scottish Premiership heavyweights Glasgow Rangers.

Numerous reports have linked Okereke with a potential move to Turkish football giants Besiktas. However, Cremonese have thus far declined to finalise a deal for the former Nigeria youth international.

As per the reports, Cremonese are yet to receive offers that meet their price expectations for Okereke’s transfer.

The recent absence of Okereke during the Italian Cup match against Crotone, where he was claimed to be suffering from a stomach ache, has further fueled speculations surrounding his future.

Cremonese’s coach, Davide Ballardini, elaborated on Okereke’s absence after the Crotone game, stating, “At this moment, it is right that those who we are certain, or almost certain, have the pleasure of staying at Cremonese take to the field. Whoever has a mind that is not so inside the team (and can be there) is right that at this moment waits for what will happen.”

The striker joined Cremonese in the summer of 2022, following a €10 million club record transfer from Club Brugge.
