Ligue 1: Montpellier’s Nigerian goal poacher Akor Adams targets Kylian Mbappe’s crown

The youngster has hit the ground running in the French top flight and cannot be blamed for dreaming big

Montpellier’s rising star, Akor Adams, has his sights set on a lofty goal this season – to claim the title of top scorer in the French Ligue 1, Soccernet.ng reports.

The young forward has burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion, displaying a level of confidence that belies his newcomer status in the league.

Last season, it was Paris Saint Germain’s prolific forward, Kylian Mbappe, who reigned supreme as the Ligue 1 goalscoring champion, notching an impressive 29 goals.

However, Adams, undaunted by the challenge posed by the Frenchman, has wasted no time making his mark.

In just his first few weeks in France, he has found the back of the net thrice, a feat that includes a memorable brace against Le Havre and a fine goal against Lyon.

As Montpellier gears up for their third matchday clash with Reims, the former Lillestrom striker stands unchallenged as the leading scorer in the league, with no player surpassing his tally.

This early success has only fueled Adams’ ambition further, as he boldly declares his intention to challenge Mbappe for the coveted title of top scorer.

Interestingly, Adams is not merely aiming for personal glory; he also aspires to propel Montpellier into contention for a coveted spot in the Champions League.

In an interview with Midi Libre, as per Allez Paillade, Adams stated his desire is “that Montpellier finish in the top three and that I finish top scorer. But the club comes first.”

But the forward’s dreams extend beyond the boundaries of club football.

Adams has his eyes firmly fixed on becoming an integral part of the Super Eagles squad in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

He candidly outlined his career plan, saying, “I will work hard and do my best to progress every week in order to be able to play in the Champions League but also play in the national team and compete in the World Cup. For now, I have to give everything for Montpellier.”

With his remarkable start to the season, Akor Adams will seek to add to his impressive tally of three Ligue 1 goals when Montpellier face Reims this Sunday.
