“I was touched” – Nigeria’s newest scoring sensation reveals how Norwegians moved him to tears

The former youth international hopes to recreate in France the connection he had with fans in Norway

Montpellier’s new signing, Akor Adams has revealed the deep emotional bond he shared with the fans of his former club, Lillestrøm SK, in Norway, Soccernet.ng reports.

Adams, who spent five years in Norway, playing for Sogndal and Lillestrøm SK, spoke candidly about the remarkable connection he formed with the Norwegian supporters.

During his stint with Lillestrøm SK, the 23-year-old striker delivered an outstanding performance, contributing to an impressive 35 goals, comprising 28 goals and seven assists, in just 50 appearances.

His exceptional output did not go unnoticed by the passionate Lillestrøm SK fans, who consistently chanted his name from the stands.

Adams, visibly moved by the support he received, admitted that the Norwegian supporters brought tears to his eyes when he departed for Montpellier.

Now donning the Montpellier jersey following a club-record €4.5 million transfer, Adams aspires to replicate this extraordinary connection with the Montpellier faithful by giving his all on the pitch and meeting their expectations.

Speaking about the importance of connecting with fans, he stated (as per Allezpaillade), “The supporters come every week; you have to give back to them by giving everything.

“We won’t win every game, but if we connect with them, they will support us. I left Norway after only a year and a half with the team, and, of course, I was touched by the reaction of the fans.

“I know a little about the reputation of Montpellier fans. For me, it’s an important part of football, and I hope I will enjoy my time here as well.”

Adams sets sights on collective success

Adams endeared himself to Montpellier fans by netting a record-equalling brace on his Ligue 1 debut.

However, when addressing the media, he emphasized his team-first approach, prioritizing collective success over personal achievements.

He asserted, “The team comes first. As a striker, it’s easy to talk about goal goals. But if the team plays well, I will play well.

“My objective is that we manage to play well, to win matches. I hope to score goals that will make us win. If I score three goals and we lose, it does not count for me.”

Manager Der Zakarian’s assessment

Montpellier’s head coach, Michel Der Zakarian, also weighed in on the rising star Adams during a press conference.

He urged for patience with the new striker, stating, “Akor Adams, we need to leave him in peace. He must continue to do what he knows best, go into the box and score goals. Be in the right place at the right time.

“From the first match he showed us and in training sessions, yes, he’s a good catch. Now, it’s up to him to prove himself over a whole season. That’s what we expect from all players, to be in sync every weekend.”

Der Zakarian praised Adams’ versatility, highlighting his ability to score from a distance and with both feet.

He noted, “His second goal didn’t surprise me; I had seen him score goals like that before. He starts from a distance, he’s powerful, and he can control the ball well.

“This time, he scored with his left foot even though he’s right-footed. He can strike with both feet.”

Adams became only the second Nigerian in history to score a double on his Ligue 1 debut, a feat previously achieved by Victor Osimhen.

The 23-year-old will look to continue his excellent scoring run when Montpellier face Lyon this weekend.
