FIFA Women’s World Cup: R16 locked in! Super Falcons to battle European Queens for Quarterfinal spot

The Super Falcons sealed qualification for the Round of 16 on Monday, and they now know their opponents after the final games of Group D were played

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will play European champions England in the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, Soccernet reports.

Nigeria finished second behind Australia in Group B after an impressive run that saw them pick two draws and one win to finish with five points.

The Super Falcons could have finished as group winners if they had won their last game against Ireland, but they could only manage a draw.

As such, they were primed to take on the winners of Group D. The fixtures for the group were concluded on Tuesday, with England thrashing China 6-1 and Denmark defeating Haiti 2-0. This ensured that the European champions finished at the summit of Group D with 9 points, while Denmark finished second.

Nigeria will now lock horns with England on the 7th of August at the Australian Stadium in Sydney.

The Super Falcons have their work cut out for them, as England have their golden generation of players. They won the last Euros, and they would want to build on that success in Australia.

Nonetheless, the Super Falcons would draw inspiration from their group stage performance and hope to shock England.
