Tochukwu Oluehi: Super Falcons’ penalty-saving queen inspiring Nigeria’s quest for World Cup glory

With the highly anticipated 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup just around the corner, Nigeria’s national team is gearing up to make their mark on the global stage.

Among the talented athletes set to don the Super Falcons’ jersey is none other than the seasoned goalkeeper, Tochukwu Oluehi.

Oluehi has long been a prominent figure in Nigerian football, having made her professional debut back in 2006 with Bayelsa Queens in the Nigerian Women’s League.

After leaving her mark with the Queens, she went on to ply her trade for Sunshine Queens before venturing abroad to showcase her skills for Bobruichanka Bobruisk in Belarus.

Driven by a thirst for international experience, Oluehi also enjoyed successful spells in Norway, Spain, and Israel.

Her consistently impressive performances led to her securing the coveted position as the Super Falcons’ first-choice goalkeeper for several years.

She has even graced the grandest stages of women’s football, participating in three FIFA World Cups and Summer Olympic Games once.

However, one particular achievement stands out in Oluehi’s career and solidifies her reputation as a top-class goalkeeper.

During the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in 2018, she made several crucial saves as the Super Falcons powered to continental glory.

Oluehi’s penalty-saving heroics will be forever remembered in the latter stages of that tournament.

Nigeria could only manage a draw in the semifinals against Cameroon, but Oluehi came up big during the penalty shootout to help the Falcons secure a spot in the final.

South Africa waited in that gold-medal match. Again, the Super Falcons could not break down the Bayana Bayana’s defence.

But thanks in no small part to Oluehi, Nigeria outwitted the South Africans through penalties to lift their most recent continental crown.

Now at 36, Oluehi brings a wealth of experience to the Super Falcons squad.

As the Super Falcons set their sights on reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1999, many Nigerians are undoubtedly placing their hopes on Oluehi to deliver whenever called upon.

Her vast experience, unwavering dedication, and remarkable goalkeeping prowess make her an invaluable asset to the team’s aspirations.

With the tournament set to kick off on July 20th, all eyes will be on Oluehi and her teammates as they aim to make Nigeria proud on the world stage.
