Official: Record-making Victor Boniface becomes the second Nigerian to join Bayer Leverkusen

The exciting Nigerian attacker has taken a step up in his career, becoming the second Nigerian to sign for the Black and Reds

German Bundesliga campaigners have completed the signing of exciting Nigerian forward Victor Boniface from Union Saint-Gilloise, Soccernet.ng reports.

Announcing the deal on their social media channels, Bayer Leverkusen confirmed that Boniface has inked a five-year deal to keep him at the club until 2028.

Although the financial intricacies of the transfer remain undisclosed, it is rumoured that Union SG greenlit Boniface’s departure for a substantial sum of €20 million, with an additional €7.5 million allocated for add-ons and contractual clauses.

It is the most expensive sale in the history of Union SG, dwarfing the seven million euros received from Club Brugge for Casper Nielsen last year.

Remarkably, the deal also encompasses a noteworthy 15% sell-on clause, further emphasising Union SG’s strategic vision.

Intriguingly, the Belgian outfit are also obliged to relinquish ten percent of the guaranteed sum, which will be directed to Bodo/Glimt, the club from which they acquired Boniface a mere twelve months ago.

It is noteworthy that Union SG had procured Boniface for a modest €2 million, thus underscoring their exceptional ability to reap a staggering tenfold return on their investment in such a short span.

Victor Boniface’s ascent to prominence has been meteoric, highlighted by his pivotal goals in the Belgian Pro League, leading Union SG to an impressive second-place finish in the recently concluded campaign.

However, his achievements do not end there, as the prodigious 22-year-old sensation remarkably clinched the top goalscorer award in the Europa League, etching his name in history as the first Nigerian to achieve such a feat.

Indeed, Boniface’s inclusion in Bayer Leverkusen’s first team marks a momentous occasion, making him only the second Nigerian player to grace the esteemed ranks of the Bundesliga side, following in the footsteps of former international Karibe Ojigwe.
