In a stunning victory, Nigerian international Victor Osimhen has emerged as the Best African International Player at the esteemed Ghana Football Awards, Soccernet.ng reports.
The coveted prize was fiercely contested, with Osimhen outshining illustrious contenders, including Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, and Yassine Bounou.
This remarkable achievement marks the first time the Napoli striker has clinched the award, firmly etching his name in the annals of history as the first Nigerian to do so.
Osimhen’s success can be attributed to his stellar performance throughout the 2023-24 season, where he played a pivotal role in Napoli’s triumphant Scudetto campaign, securing the title for the first time in over three decades. His exceptional goal-scoring prowess resulted in an impressive tally of 26 league goals.
Furthermore, Osimhen’s contributions propelled Napoli to new heights, as the club reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their storied existence.
Notably, he showcased his skill and finesse on the international stage as well. Osimhen spearheaded Nigeria’s charge, delivering a brace in their triumphant 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone in Monrovia, securing their place in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence in Ivory Coast in January. With seven goals, Osimhen is the top scorer in the AFCON-qualifying campaign.
During the Ghana Football Awards ceremony, the Super Eagles striker garnered the highest number of votes, surpassing the likes of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou.
