Tolu, Yusuf, Boniface: Which Super Eagles hopeful will emerge as the Belgian FDA champion?

As the Belgian First Division A season reaches its climax, the battle for the title intensifies, with three teams vying for glory on Sunday: KAA Gent, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Royale Antwerp.

Each contender has a Nigerian player in their ranks, adding an extra layer of anticipation to this thrilling finale. Club Brugge, however, will serve as mere spectators, having faltered in the playoffs.

KRC Genk boast the talents of Tolu Arokodare and Yira Sor, two exciting Nigerian prospects. Arokodare joined the club in January, stepping in after Onuachu’s departure to Southampton.

Union Saint-Gilloise, on the other hand, rely on the prowess of Victor Boniface, whose exceptional campaign has attracted interest from several clubs in the top-five European leagues.

Meanwhile, Alhassan Yusuf has been instrumental in Royale Antwerp’s journey towards the league title, displaying maturity beyond his years as a young midfielder.

For these three Nigerian players, success in the Belgian First Division A could pave the way for their first international call-up to the Super Eagles, further elevating their careers.

Super Eagles midfielder, Raphael Onyedika and Club Brugge, unfortunately, witnessed their title dreams fade away due to their poor playoff form.

Who will win the title race?

The Jupiler Pro League title race hangs in the balance, with Genk seeking redemption after narrowly missing out on the championship last season.

A convincing 3-1 victory over Club Brugge last week boosted their aspiration. Still, they must now defeat Antwerp and rely on Club Brugge securing at least a draw against Union Saint-Gilloise to secure the crown.

On the other hand, Royale Antwerp’s path to glory is simpler: beat against Genk.

A win would secure the title regardless of other results, while even a draw may suffice if Union SG fail to triumph. Alhassan Yusuf, having already secured the Belgian Cup this season, stands on the precipice of a potential double.

Union Saint-Gilloise, seeking their first title triumph since 1935, face a more arduous task.

Their destiny lies beyond their control, as they must win their match against Club Brugge and rely on a draw between Genk and Antwerp to lift the trophy.

Although Victor Boniface’s participation is uncertain due to an injury, his contribution throughout the season could prove pivotal in this historic campaign.

Both matches will kick off at 5:30 pm (Nigerian time) on Sunday when the fate of these Nigerian hopefuls will be decided amidst an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement.
