Empoli have set their sights on acquiring Nigerian midfielder Michael Folorunsho, who is currently under the ownership of Napoli, Soccernet.ng reports.
Folorunsho, 25, joined Napoli back in 2019 but has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Naples-based club.
Last season, the talented midfielder came tantalizingly close to featuring for Napoli before coach Luciano Spalletti decided to send him on loan to Bari.
Interestingly, after Folorunsho left, Victor Osimhen enjoyed a sensational campaign, scoring an impressive 26 goals and propelling Napoli to their first Scudetto title in over three decades.
While on loan at Bari, Folorunsho showcased his skills, aiding the team in their quest for promotion to Serie A.
He found the back of the net nine times and provided four assists across all competitions.
Now, as Folorunsho returns to Napoli ahead of the upcoming season, he hopes to convince new manager Rudi Garcia that he deserves a place in the first team, eagerly anticipating the chance to play alongside Osimhen.
However, the prospect of this partnership appears to be in jeopardy, as Empoli has expressed a keen interest in securing Folorunsho’s services, as reported by Sky Sports via Tutto Napoli.
While this potential move may hinder his dream of playing alongside Osimhen, it would undoubtedly grant Folorunsho the opportunity to realize his aspiration of playing in the prestigious Serie A.
Although Folorunsho boasts an impressive track record in the lower divisions of Italian football, having accumulated 88 appearances in Serie B and 71 in Serie C, he is yet to make his mark in the top-flight Italian league.
A transfer to Empoli could offer him the platform to showcase his talents at the highest level.
