Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has cautioned his former club about the potential risks of signing Victor Osimhen while claiming Harry Kane would be the ideal signing this summer, Soccernet.ng reports
Ferdinand, with his wealth of experience, provided compelling arguments highlighting why Manchester United should prioritise a move for Kane over Osimhen.
Osimhen and Kane have emerged as notable contenders for a switch to Old Trafford, impressing with their impressive goal-scoring records of over 20 goals each in their respective leagues this season.
Osimhen’s triumph in leading Napoli to the Scudetto guarantees him a spot in next season’s Champions League. In contrast, Kane, the England captain, has missed out due to Tottenham’s late-season slump.
With only one year left on his contract with Spurs, Kane’s potential transfer seems plausible. While Ferdinand acknowledges the significance of Kane’s extensive Premier League experience, he is also mindful of the challenges of negotiating with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. The former United star believes his old club should avoid excessive spending.
Ferdinand, in a recent episode of his Five YouTube channel, commented, “A number nine is the obvious area that Man Utd need to sort out; we need to get a number in the building. There are two names that keep coming up – Osimhen from Napoli and Harry Kane. Ultimately, it is down to Kane and (Tottenham chairman) Daniel Levy.”
Expressing optimism, Ferdinand adds, “If they both say ‘yes, we want to make it happen,’ I think Man Utd get it done. The numbers can’t be ridiculous; Levy’s got to be realistic. They’ve got blood, sweat, tears, records, goals, the lot out of Harry Kane.”
Furthermore, Ferdinand encourages Tottenham to allow Kane to pursue new challenges, stating, “Let the guy do what he needs to do now, man. Let him go on and try to compete for Champions Leagues, for championships, for cup competitions.”
Osimhen scored 23 goals and added four assists for Napoli during their Scudetto-winning campaign. The 24-year-old is on the radar of several of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and PSG all credited with interest.
