Napoli’s President confirms Osimhen and manager Spalletti will not work together next season

The Italian manager turned the Super Eagles forward into one of the best strikers in the world

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed that manager Luciano Spalletti will not lead the team in the upcoming season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Spalletti, appointed as Napoli’s manager in 2021 following the dismissal of Gennaro Gattuso, achieved remarkable success during his tenure.

Under Spalletti’s guidance, Napoli secured a coveted UEFA Champions League qualification in his debut season at the helm.

The Italian tactician played a pivotal role in transforming Victor Osimhen into a formidable forward, and the Nigerian’s goal-scoring prowess propelled Napoli to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

Additionally, Osimhen’s crucial goals contributed to Napoli’s triumph in the Scudetto race, ending a 33-year wait for the prestigious title.

However, tensions between Spalletti and ADL were always apparent. Despite the club’s desire for Spalletti to continue, the manager has expressed his wish to take a year-long break from coaching.

De Laurentiis, speaking during an interview on Rai 3 (as per Tutto Napoli), confirmed Spalletti’s departure and expressed his support for the decision.

“He (Spalletti) wants a sabbatical year, and as a free man, after giving us so much, we cannot oppose his desire. I am grateful for his contributions, and it is only right that he pursues what he loves to do,” said ADL.

With Spalletti’s departure, speculations regarding his successor have already begun.

Reports suggest that former Barcelona and Spain boss Luis Enrique is the frontrunner for the managerial position at Napoli.

Meanwhile, Osimhen’s future at Napoli also remains uncertain.

The talented striker has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United, Newcastle, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and PSG.

As the transfer window looms, Osimhen’s potential departure adds another layer of intrigue to Napoli’s offseason plans.
