The Grigiorossi started the season poorly, but there seems to be a revival in recent weeks
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers scored the winning goal for Cremonese in their hard-fought 1-0 victory against Empoli Soccernet.ng reports.
Cremonese resumed their survival battle on Friday. The Grigiorossi started the season poorly, but they seem to be picking up in recent weeks.
They claimed a tough 3-2 win over Sampdoria last week at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. And they continued with that form when they welcomed Empoli to Stadio Giovanni Zini on Friday night.
Cremonese coach Davide Ballardini handed Super Eagles star Dessers his second consecutive start, and the former Genk man wasted no time in proving his quality.
On the other end, Tyrone Ebuehi featured for Empoli in a four-man defence.
Just four minutes into the game, he made a smart run forward which was read by Leonardo Sernicola.
The defender whipped a precise long ball forward, which Dessers intercepted with a beautiful chest down that took it away from his markers. He then sent a low shot that just trickled into the net to give Cremonese the lead.
There were a few chances in the first half, but none of the teams was able to put them away.
More chances were created in the second half but both teams could not score. Dessers had a decent game. Asides from his goal, he had just one more shot in the game.
He was taken off for compatriot David Okereke in the 67th minute. Cremonese saw out the 1-0 victory despite a late push from Empoli. It was their second victory in a row, and it puts them on 19 points after 30 games.
Cremonese still sit deep in relegation waters. They are seven points away from safety. Dessers now has six goals this season.
