Okocha made a name for himself at Fenerbahçe, one of the teams he played for, before transferring to Paris Saint-Germain in 1998 for a club record fee of €12.40 million
Super Eagles legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has showered encomium on former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder, Mesut Ozil.
According to the Bolton Wanderers legend revealed that the German playmaker was the best of his generation and an example to young players.
According to rumours, the midfielder left Mikel Arteta’s squad to join Fenerbahçe after he was left to fade into the background, however after a few months at the Ulker Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, his contract was mutually called off, forcing him to move to the rival team, Istanbul Basaksehir.
Okocha, who is revered as the club’s legend, acknowledged that Ozil joined at the wrong moment, but despite not realising all of his potential there, his prior accomplishments for Real Madrid and all other clubs he has played for speak for him.
“He had an excellent career. He was the best of his generation. An excellent human being. He is an exemplary player for young players. Maybe he came here when Fenerbahçe was bad. You also need luck. A worldwide name. As a member of the German National Team, it was a great race as a person of Turkish origin. We know about his career at Real Madrid and Arsenal. It naturally shows him to be one of the best of his era. He also has excellent character.” Okocha said, as quoted by hurriyet.
Ozil played 37 times for Fenerbahçe and recorded a total of 9 goals and 7 assists for the club before retiring at Basaksehir.
