The Partenopeans needed a victory to seal to claim the Scudetto, but Salernitana spoiled their party
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen could not deliver the goods as Salernitana delayed Napoli’s Scudetto celebrations after a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Soccernet.ng reports.
Napoli welcomed Salernitana to Naples on Sunday. After Lazio’s loss to Inter Milan earlier, Napoli just needed to eke out a victory against Salernitana.
The Partenopeans took charge of the game from the first minute, bossing possession and creating chances. However, they were unable to break the deadlock in the first half.
Osimhen had a few cracks at goal, but he was unable to rattle the net. Nonetheless, the Partenopeans kept pushing for the goal, and they eventually got it.
Mathias Olivera jumped highest to meet a cross from Giacomo Raspadori and sent a glancing header into the net to put Napoli in front in the 62nd minute.
Osimhen could have scored 15 minutes later, but Guillermo Ochoa showed himself in good light to save the strike.
It looked like Napoli were cruising to the win, and their first Scudetto in 33 years. But Salernitana had other ideas as Boulaye Dia scored in the 84th minute to make it 1-1.
Napoli tried hard to get the equalizer, but Salernitana held on strong to ensure it ended 1-1. The result leaves Napoli with 79 points, while second-placed Lazio have 61 points with six games left. Mathematically Lazio can still win the Serie A if they win their remaining games and Napoli lose their last six.
Napoli just need one point from their last six games to land their first Scudetto in 33 years.
