WAFU B: Nigeria’s Falconets to face Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, others in maiden edition

Nigeria have confirmed their participation in the first edition of the WAFU B Women’s U-20 Cup of Nations, set to take place in Kumasi from May 20 to June 4, 2023.

The tournament, organized by the West African Football Union Zone B, will see seven countries compete for the title. Apart from Nigeria, the other participating nations include Ghana, Niger, Benin, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Burkina Faso.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex have been selected as the venues for the competition. The Secretariat of the West African Football Union Zone B has also released the logo for the event.

Nigeria’s women’s national under-20 side, the Falconets have a proud history in international competitions.

The team has qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and has been runners-up twice, losing to Germany on both occasions in 2010 and 2014. They were also quarterfinalists at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In the African U-20 World Cup qualification, the Falconets have won the championship title and qualified for the World Cup 10 times, with the most recent being in 2022.

The Falconets also won the gold medal at the football competition at the African Games in 2019.

With Nigeria’s rich history in women’s football, their participation in the Women’s U-20 Cup of Nations will surely be a tournament highlight. Fans will be eagerly anticipating their performances as they aim to add another trophy to their already impressive collection.
