The RCD Mallorca Ethics Committee has taken disciplinary action against a fan who allegedly racially abused Super Eagles and Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze during a league match between the two clubs in February.
Mallorca won the encounter 4-2 played at the Visit Mallorca Estadi in Palma de Mallorca on February 18.
Chukwueze scored Villarreal’s second goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 50th minute before the hosts scored two further goals to seal the win.
Chukwueze, being one of Villarreal’s best players during the encounter, was constantly racially abused by a Mallorca fan.
In response, Mallorca has issued a stiff penalty, withdrawing the fan’s subscription card for three years as punishment. The club stated that it is “against all xenophobic manifestations” and is committed to eliminating this type of behavior from its matches.
However, the offender’s troubles do not end there, as the National Police has taken up the case and is set to prosecute the fan for a hate crime. A court date of April 4th has already been fixed.
Mallorca reiterate that it will continue actively working to eradicate all xenophobia and racism from its matches. The club hopes this incident will serve as a wake-up call for everyone to stand up against such behaviour.
Mallorca’s swift response to this incident shows its strong stance against racism in football. All football clubs need to take similar actions to create a safe and inclusive environment for all players and fans.
Chukwueze has played a crucial role in Villarreal’s recent success, registering 11 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for the Yellow Submarines this campaign.
