Bassey has been relegated to making substitute appearances at Ajax since Heitinga took charge, but he wants that to change soon
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has revealed that he is focused on improving his game so that he can fit into Ajax’s playing style.
Bassey sealed a €23million transfer to Ajax from Rangers last summer, becoming the club’s third-most-expensive signing ever.
However, he has struggled to fit into the club. Former Ajax players have often criticized Bassey for his inability to use the ball.
Still, former coach Alfred Schreuder stuck with him. Unfortunately, the decision did not pay off, as Ajax struggled to win games and were conceding goals aplenty.
Since John Heitinga replaced Schreuder as Ajax boss, Bassey has been restricted to making appearances from the bench.
Nonetheless, the versatile Super Eagles defender is not discouraged, as he intends to improve and fight his way back into the lineup.
“I want to better understand Ajax’s style and adapt myself to it,” Bassey told ESPN per Ajaxshowtime.
The Super Eagles full-back added: “I want the style to suit me more. That’s my goal now. I can do anything as long as I want it bad enough.”
Heitinga was full of praise for Bassey after his performance again Twente. Still, the Super Eagles star would have to prove his worth and show consistency if he wants to become an important part of the setup at Ajax.
