Ajax have struggled a lot this season, but some ex-players of Ajax have identified Bassey as the weak link
Former Ajax winger Kenneth Perez has called Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey “a joke” for his performance in Ajax’s 1-1 draw with Volendam on Thursday.
Ajax have struggled badly under Alfred Schreuder this season. Their draw against Volendam on Wednesday was their seventh game without a win.
Schreuder was sacked in the aftermath of the result, and Godenzonen are looking to rebuild with a new coach.
However, after the game, former Ajax winger Perez was dissatisfied with what he saw from the Ajax players. But he was particularly disgusted by Bassey’s displays, and he shared thoughts.
“Bassey is poor on the ball, it is a repetitive story with him,” Perez said as per Glasgowtimes.
“He is very, very, very difficult on the ball. Sometimes it’s even touching when you’re watching.
“I really have the feeling that every time that round thing(ball) rolls towards him he thinks: ‘oh f***, what am I going to do with that thing again?
“If you want to make him play like Davinson Sánchez, then you have to put him in the center.
“He has power and speed, but on the ball, he is really just abysmal. He can’t get any better, of course, because he should also get a bit of the fact that he is a joke.”
Kenneth Perez is not the first retired Ajax player to tear Bassey apart. Sneijder, De Mos, and Marciano Vink have all blamed Bassey for Ajax’s struggles.
The former Rangers man will look to return to his best form, as Ajax rebuild after Schreuder’s exit.
