Ajax has struggled since the start of the season, and they have decided to let go of their gaffer
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey will get a new coach at Ajax soon, as Alfred Schreuder has been sacked just seven months after he got the job.
Bassey arrived at Ajax from Rangers last summer in one of the club’s record deals. And under Schreuder, the Nigerian defender has enjoyed a lot of playtime.
Schreuder was employed in July 2022 as a replacement for Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag.
However, the results haven’t gone Ajax’s way this season. Godenzonen currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie.
They were dumped out of the Champions League earlier in the season after losing four of their six games. And they have drawn their last three games in the Eredivisie.
Schreuder has been under fire for some weeks for Ajax’s poor results, and after their disappointing 1-1 draw against Volendam on Thursday, the club decided to sack him.
“Ajax has immediately suspended Alfred Schreuder,” the club wrote.
“The trainer’s contract was valid until June 30, 2024, but will now be terminated immediately.
“The many points lost and the team’s lack of development are the main reasons for this decision.
“The club management no longer has confidence in further cooperation. The collaboration with assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach will also be terminated.”
For Super Eagles star Bassey, he would have to adjust to a new manager. The versatile defender has been one of the most maligned players at Ajax this season, with many ex-players blaming him for the club’s woes. Still, Schreuder stuck with him.
Bassey would hope that the new coach helps the team return to their top status.
As far as I know, Schreuder was hired in July 2022 to take Erik Ten Hag’s place as Manchester United’s head coach.
