Nigerians respond with humorous remarks and memes on what would happen if their nation host the FIFA World Cup.
The recent news that the Minister of Works and Information, Babatunde Raji Fashola, urged Nigeria to host a significant event has been met with funny reactions from Nigerian fans.
The previous governor of Lagos State recently made the claim that the country’s economy would benefit from the endeavour to host a major tournament as it would increase trade links with other nations.
However, Nigeria has already played host to a number of significant international football tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the Under-17 World Cup.
But the West African country has not hosted a significant competition since hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The 59-year-old told Thisday that either Nigeria bid alone to host a major tournament or an event that includes other West African countries “must be led by Nigeria.”
Although it cannot be compared to the $300 billion Qatar spent on infrastructure to host the 2022 World Cup, given the current status of the country’s facilities for hosting big events.
With the insurgency, kidnapping, living standards, poor infrastructure, killings, mismanagement, and a host of other issues affecting the country, a Twitter user, Naija Nation, questioned whether the nation could actually host the FIFA World Cup.
