The former Nigeria international midfielder has not been able to give his best to Reggina since joining the Italian side in the summer
Italian Serie B campaigners Reggina have announced (as per Il Reginno) that Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi has undergone surgery to correct an injury he cupped in training.
Obi joined Reggina in July on a free transfer after ending his one-year stint with Serie A club Salernitana.
Injury and poor form have, however, limited the 31-year-old’s appearances for the Amaranth in the second tier of the Italian league setup.
The Inter Milan academy product has only gone on the pitch once for Reggina, playing the last 13 minutes in the 1-1 draw away to Cagliari on October 29.
It got worse for Obi a few days ago after he suffered a rectus femoris injury in his right leg.
Reggina decided on surgery to speed up Obi’s recovery time from the injury, and the club has made it public that the procedure was successful.
Still, Obi is expected to be out of action for between 45 and 60 days and will likely miss all of Reggina’s games until the end of January.
A former Nigeria international, Obi has 17 caps for the Super Eagles since making his debut in 2011. But the former Chievo Verona ace has not played for the three-time African champions since 2018.
