The Selecao were massive favourites heading into the tie, but the Atlas Lions were just too dogged

Morocco secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Portugal to seal a spot in the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco had a big task on their hands when they took on Portugal in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

The Selecao were overwhelming favourites going into the tie because of their quality. Also, in the last month, Portugal have beaten two strong African teams. They defeated Nigeria 4-0, then they beat Ghana 3-2.

However, Morocco proved that they were better than their African neighbours when they locked horns with Portugal.

The Selecao bossed the game, but Morocco relied on fast breaks. It eventually paid off in the 43rd minute. Youssef En Nesyri got on the end of a cross from Attiat-Allah and beat Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa with a fine header to make it 1-0.

Morocco managed to hold on to the lead going into the break. In the second half, Portugal threw in everything with the kitchen sink, but Morocco held on strong even after Walid Cheddira was sent off in the second half.

The North Africans will battle the winner of the game between England and France for a spot in the final.

Moroccan team is now the Giant of Africa. The team show resilience, cohesiveness and togetherness. I love that team. They possess something that the other African teams lack.
