The two Super Eagles stars came up with the goods but Osimhen ran out victorious
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored the opener for Atalanta, but Osimhen hit back for Napoli to power the Partenopeans to a 2-1 victory.
Napoli traveled to Atalanta in a crucial top-of-the-table clash. Victory for the Partenopeans would have given the Partenopeans some comfort at the top of the table, while a victory for Atalanta would have cut Napoli’s lead to two.
Atalanta started the game on top, creating chances and they could have gotten ahead in the opening embers if not for their profligacy.
Nonetheless, they got their reward in the 17th minute. Atalanta were awarded a penalty after Osimhen handled the ball in the box.
Lookman did not waste the opportunity, as he sent a wicked penalty into the roof of the net to put La Dea ahead after 19 minutes.
Unfortunately for Atalanta, their lead did not last. Napoli got their acts together and went searching for an equalizer.
Piotr Zielinski sent a teasing cross into the box, and super hitman Osimhen who was lurking in the box jumped highest to covert with a brilliant header.
Twelve minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, as he set up Eljif Elmas, who rifled the ball into the net in the 32nd minute.
Both teams huffed and puffed in the second half, but they had to settle for a 2-1 result.
The win gives Napoli an eight-point cushion at the top of the Serie A. Lookman remains the highest goalscorer at Atalanta.
Osimhen’s goal ensures that he becomes the highest-scoring Nigerian in Serie A history. The 23-year-old hitman now has eight league goals this season.
