President Buhari gives Super Eagles legend posthumous award

The most prolific striker in Nigeria’s football history died on May 4, 2012, aged only 48

Late Super Eagles forward Rashidi Yekini has been given a posthumous national award over ten years after his demise.

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday evening, conferred the national title of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) on Yekini.

Governor of Kwara state Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq revealed the development on his official Twitter page.

Gov. Abdulrazaq also appreciated President Buhari for honouring the late football star.

Yekini is the Nigerian national team’s all-time leading scorer with 37 goals in 62 goals.

The former Shooting Stars striker was named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993 and helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia the following year.

Yekini netted Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the FIFA World Cup in 1994 and also represented the African giants at the 1998 World Cup in France.

During his playing days, Yekini played for clubs in Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Switzerland.
