Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has stated that the response he got from the Nottingham Forest fans after he scored the winner against West Ham was remarkable.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest this summer after they sealed promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 24 years.
It was not a great start to life in the English top-flight, as Nottingham Forest lost their opening fixture away at Newcastle United.
However, Steve Cooper’s lads did better in their second game. The Tricky Trees played welcomed West Ham to the City Ground in their first Premier League home fixture since they got relegated in 1997.
Forest were impressive on the afternoon, and in the end, it was Awoniyi’s fortuitous first-half goal that sealed a 1-0 victory for the Premier League returnees.
The goal held a lot of significance for Awoniyi, his teammates, and the club. Asides from that it was the Super Eagles striker’s first Premier League goal, it was also the first home Premier League goal for the club in over 24 years.
Awoniyi spoke about the remarkable affection he got after his strike, and how it could signal the start of great things for the club.
“I didn’t even know until after the game on Sunday that it was so long since the club had been in this league,” Awoniyi told the telegraph.
“I can’t even tell you how many messages I had on my phone afterward, it was crazy!
“It was just a special day for everyone. The crowd was very loud, and one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever played in.
“It’s obviously good to score so early into my time here but the most important thing is the team winning. And the victory will give his confidence moving forward.”
Awoniyi would look to continue poaching the goals for Nottingham Forest to ensure that they do not return to the Championship.
