The Neapolitans have brought in another striker to complement the effort of their Nigerian import on the eve of the start of the Italian Championship
According to Italian transfer market expert Nico Schira, Napoli have completed the signing of Argentine striker Giovanni Simeone from Hellas Verona, pending a medical.
Simeone, son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, will arrive as a second striker to Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen.
The Argentina international comes in as a replacement for Belgian attacker Dries Mertens, who Napoli released at the expiration of his contract.
Simeone is expected to offer stiff competition to Osimhen in Napoli’s attack, even if both strikers can also play together.
While Osimhen managed 14 goals and two assists last season, Simeone fired in 17 goals and created six assists for lowly Verona. Osimhen, however, spent several weeks on the treatment table due to a facial injury and coronavirus infection.
As per the report, Napoli will pay Verona €3 million to acquire Simeone on loan, with an obligation to buy for €12M at the end of the campaign.
If all goes according to plan, Napoli will, at the end of the loan spell, hand Simeone a four-year contract until 2027 worth €1.7 million per year.
Meanwhile, in other news, another Super Eagles striker has completed his medical as he draws close to sealing a return to the Premier League with a Nottingham Forest deal in place.
