Nigeria have dominated the African championship since its inception, but there is a new sheriff in town

South Africa beat Morocco 2-1 in the final of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to claim their first-ever continental title.

The Banyana Banyana squared off against Morocco in the final of the 2022 WAFCON. South Africa had continually come close to winning the WAFCON, finishing second four times.

However, the Desiree Ellis-led South Africans finally broke the jinx in grand style at Casablanca.

The Banyana Banyana showed great teamwork from the start of the game. And they could have gone in front early on, but for resolute esolute defending from the Atlas Lionesses.

The first half ended goalless, but the game sparked to life in the second half. Hilda Magaia struck twice with nine minutes to give South Africa a two-goal cushion.

Rosella pulled one back for Morocco in the 80th  minute, but it was not enough. Morocco piled pressure on South Africa, but the Banyana Banyana held on to the 2-1 lead to claim their first WAFCON title, usurping Nigeria to be the new queens of the continent.
